4.00 avg. rating (79% score) - 4 votes

One of the most common interview questions concerning your career goals is ‘Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?’ Most of us don’t think or plan for that long and usually get stuck at this question.  Hence many candidates find it difficult to answer it as the question may sound easy but if not answered correctly, it can be a deal-breaker.

Here are the quick tips to answer it correctly:

Understand the interviewers’ intention: This job interview question does not target you or intend to check your intuitive capabilities. They are simply trying to understand your professional objectives or career plan to understand whether you are a good fit for them or not. And in case you are selected, will you stick with them for long or not.

Sell your skills: It is an opportunity for you to show your seriousness about your career. Not all freshers think about the long term goals. And here you can set yourself apart from the crowd. You should talk about your aspirations, and determination to achieve your career objectives. However, be very careful while answering your five years plan and sound realistic.

Give a personalized answer: We recommend you to go for a personalized answer based on you academic profile and internship experience or any project experience, if any. This will help you to relate your education to your skills and career objectives; be short term or long term. Personalization always help and you can come across as a candidate with a realistic and reasonable approach. Your answer should be a mix of your current plan, skills and aspirations. Here is a sample answer for you:

“For a beginner like me, the next five years are going to be highly important. With a degree in <mention your discipline> and a fruitful experience as <mention your internship profile> in my kitty already, I feel I am ready to take up the responsibilities highlighted in this position. Your organization will be an excellent start, where I can make the most of my skills <mention your skills>. Having said that, I plan to build floors of success on this foundation. This is where I see myself in the upcoming five years.”

Be honest: Interviewers come across many candidates on a regular basis and understand the difference between crammed answers, rehashes clichés and real answers. This is why it is more important for you to avoid standard answers to this one of most common job interview questions. Be honest and show your well-preparation and not eagerness. Your contemplation into your career should be visible.

Communicate the right details:  Your answer should not show you as someone who has applied on a whim and have no idea about the expected roles and responsibilities. Therefore, read the job description thoroughly and also understand the company’s vision, if this is what you would like to pursue.

Don’t be too over ambitious: Don’t come up with fancy answers as ‘I want to be a CEO in the next 5 years down the line’ or ‘I plan to give a try to my own start up.’ There is nothing wrong in being truthful if that’s your actual plan, it should just not sound too crazy or unrelated! Here, you should try to stay in sync with the company’s expectations and try to sell your skills.

Strike the perfect balance: It is completely alright if you have not thought about your long term career plan as of now but do not resort to lying. Strike a balance between being reasonable and aspirational. While you do not want to undersell your skills, you should not oversell too!
