What to Include in Your Resume

Before you start typing your resume, please make a note of these points:

  1. Keep a steady Font throughout the resume
  2. Your resume should not exceed two pages
  3. Keep the alignment of text as ‘justified’
  4. Font Size should be uniform for all titles and constant throughout for the remaining text

Now that your basics are ready, here’s some information on what to include in your college student resume or in your CV as a fresh / recent graduate.

  • Academics. Emphasize your education history. List down all the information about your education to add value to your application. The point is to convince your recruiter that you can help a company grow. Alongside your college and degree, mention all your achievements, like high GPA, academic awards and related accomplishments. In case you have undergone certifications and training which align with the job you are applying for, do mention them.
  • Relevant experience. Take a pause and think of all the skills and experiences that this job description or JD is demanding. Do you possess them? Is there some credible experience to back the same? For instance, did you undergo an internship in a company with similar business outcomes? Are you already in a part-time job with similar skill demands? Or are there any other avenues where you developed related skills or qualities? In case these work experiences are not directly related, highlight other experiences which you feel are relevant.
  • Extracurricular activities. As a student job seeker, it is very important that you include extracurricular activities in your resume. Also, stress on this section if your exposure is limited when it comes to the core skills needed for a job. Were you a busy bee in college? Were you the captain of the basketball team or a swimmer? Incorporate all these extra curricular activities in your resume and elevate your job application. Such pointers would surely draw the eye of your hiring manager. Also, introducing extracurricular activities in your resume is a window into your character and interests outside of work and academics. Eventually, your resume steps outside the cold data surrounding it.
  • Leadership examples. Have you held a position in a literary club, or have you been a captain of a sports team? Are you a natural leader or have you taken up leadership responsibilities during school / college? List these experiences and show that you have the ability to lead a team.

Tips for writing a college resume

Writing the first resume of your career will be the toughest of all the resumes you write, ever! Also, as a student, without relevant work experience in the files, you have to still convince a hiring manager that you are the best choice for the job. So create an offer-worthy resume with these and create a strong college resume.

  • Use action verbs. Action verbs help show your responsibility. When describing your achievements, use action words. Words like led, researched and created to portray your experiences in an energetic way. Here are some useful action word examples for you to use.

“Team Player”
“Leadership”
“Responsible For”
“Communication”
“Achiever”
“Worked On”
“Improved”
“Researched”
“Creativity and Problem Solving”
“Managed”
“Assist”
“Utilize”
“Developed”
“Devised”
“Founded”
“Engineered”
“Established”
“Formalized”
“Formed”
“Formulated”
“Implemented”
“Incorporated”
“Initiated”
“Instituted”
“Introduced”
“Launched”
“Pioneered”
“Spearheaded”

  • Quantify when possible. Provide data points to prove your worth i.e. whenever possible, quantify your achievements with numbers. This is a great way to show your achievements. Example – Led a team of 15 students”, “Attracted 30+ members to NGO”, “Taught 10 underprivileged students on a regular basis”, “Led a team of 30 students to get newsletter published that had a readership of 5000+
Garnered news articles monthly from 10 departments & 3 technical teams in a team of 9″ so on and so forth.
  • Showcase the most sought-after skills for recruiters to see: Some skills are in high-demand for employers when they are hiring college graduates. Also, many other skills that do not specifically relate to a job that you are applying for also play an important role. Include the most relevant skill first followed by the rest in your college student resume.
  • Carefully edit and proofread. Proofread your resume carefully over and over and over, before submitting it. A clean, error-free resume speaks volumes about how serious you are about your career. It will also make you look professional. Ask a friend or family member to read the resume for you to remove blind spots.
  • Use a resume example. Use a resume example (like the one below) or college student resume template to guide your own writing. A resume example can help you decide what kind of content to include, as well as how to format your resume.
💡 TIP: When you use a resume template, be sure to tailor it to fit your own experience and qualifications, and the job for which you are applying.
